Origins
In older times, the shaman would fast for days. The sorcerer would climb the mountain. The priest would sacrifice a living goat. Today, we are told that to manifest our desires, all we need do is to want it enough, and in the correct way. This is not real thaumaturgy. This is SLACK MAGIC.
This label was born as an imprint for the work of laptop music producer Loopsnake and his many side projects. It persists as an archive of his works and as an anchor for new music in a time where permanent physical media is a luxury and the internet becomes more ephemeral and ineffable every passing day.
We make music for your commute to work, and to listen to in headphones, in your bed, in the dark. We make music for the back room of the club, and for the DIY rave in the forest. We make music for musicians, and we make music for music lovers.
[When I did eventually read The Secret, I got to a passage where I was told to just visualise cheques coming in the mail instead of bills. Who even sends cheques in this day and age, I thought? Furiously, I put on my shoes and stormed out the door to my letter box. There was just one envelope addressed to me. I opened it - a cheque for $432. It wasn't income, though. It was a liquidation. It was money that was already mine, in fact the crystalisation of an investment that I'd lost money on. Still, it remains the only cheque I've ever received in the mail. AM]Process
Slack Magic Records dot com serves to bring music together. Whether it's physically made, published to the streamers, SoundCloud only, Bandcamp exclusive or lost to the archives, it is all bound together here.
We believe that musicians should be fairly compensated for their work. While it has always been challenging to make money as an artist, we lament the fact that fewer creators than ever draw a living wage from their creations. We do not believe that music should always be free, but we acknowledge the fact that, functionally speaking, it is.
Slack Magic's music is available to stream or download for free, but if you enjoy the work we invite you to make a purchase through the artist's Bandcamp page, to buy them a coffee through our Artist's page, or to donate to them directly if they have made the option available.
Demos
If you're a musician who wishes to join the Slack Magic family despite our lack of infamy, budget and social reach, we do not currently understand why. You are free to contact us at [email protected]. If you are an oddball musician from Australia, Thailand or the UAE, especially one with new music and a legacy, we are particularly interested to hear from you. Chris this means you. Send me your demos. AM
